Abstract

Background: The main problem faced by the community of Wanawali Village, Cibatu District, Purwakarta Regency, is the high dependence on chemical fertilizers and the suboptimal utilization of abundant organic waste in the surrounding environment. This condition increases agricultural production costs and decreases soil fertility in the long term.

Objective: This community service program aims to improve the knowledge, skills, and awareness of the community—particularly farmer groups—in processing organic waste into environmentally friendly and economically valuable organic fertilizer, as well as to encourage community initiatives to produce organic fertilizer independently.

Method: The activity was carried out using a participatory approach through counseling, training, and hands-on practice in producing both solid and liquid organic fertilizers. The training took place at the Wanawali Village Hall on January 16, 2025, involving village officials, agricultural extension officers, the Purwakarta Agriculture Office, community service (KKN) students, and farmer groups as the main participants.

Results: The program showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge and skills in producing organic fertilizer. Participants were able to utilize natural materials such as straw, dry leaves, and animal manure, and they learned simple methods to check fertilizer quality through smell and texture. Moreover, the activity fostered motivation and behavioral changes among participants toward sustainable agriculture, as well as initiated small farmer groups to develop independent organic fertilizer production as a new economic opportunity.

Conclusion: This community service activity successfully enhanced the community’s capacity in managing organic waste while strengthening awareness of environmentally friendly agricultural practices. The program holds great potential to be developed into a village-based business unit managed by farmer groups or the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes), thereby supporting both economic independence and environmental sustainability.
