Abstract

ABSTRACT

Women in the workplace are being stereotyped both in public and private places (Lips, 1999). Despite the stereotype of women, there are still few studies that discuss gender issue especially in EFL language textbooks that focus on representation of women in social roles (occupational). To fill this empirical gap, the researcher presents a study about gender representation of women in social roles by using the document analysis. The data focus on how stereotyped women represented in the texts by using analytical discourse model from mill’s  (1992). The analysis is focused on one of the Indonesian textbook with the title Bahasa Inggris for grade twelve. In analyzing the texts, the researcher investigates the position of subject-object and writer-reader in a text. From eleven chapters, only five chapters were analyzed since they include the emergence of gender bias. The finding shows that the stereotype of women in social roles happens in three chapters. Based on the analysis, women are presented as second person in public space, men are depicted in higher position rather than women, and domestic space is depicted with women. From the analysis the writers of the book still try to present gender equally in some chapter proven by leading the reader opinion to see different perspective in the use of subject presented.
